Testing used framing nailers, roofing guns, and compressors Cómo probar clavadoras de framing, de techo y compresores usados
Air nailers and jobsite compressors take a beating on roofs and slab decks. You cannot tell if a head valve leaks or a piston ring is worn just by holding the gun in the air. Plug it into an air line or pop a battery in and run these six checks.
Six checks on nailers and air Seis pruebas en la mesa
Safety. Keep your free hand off the nose and point the gun down into thick scrap lumber away from everyone at the booth. Unplug the air hose or pull the battery before looking into the nose or magazine.
Seguridad.

1 Listen at the cap and trigger before you fire Escucha la tapa y el gatillo al conectar el aire
Clip a pressurized air hose onto the fitting and hold the gun near your ear without touching the trigger or the nose. A steady hiss from the exhaust cap means a dried or torn head-valve O-ring. A hiss at the trigger valve means the trigger cartridge needs a rebuild kit.
Pass Holds air silently at 90 to 100 PSI with no hiss.

Sink three full-length framing nails into a doubled 2x4. After every shot, disconnect the hose and look at the nose: the driver blade should retract all the way above the nail channel. If the tip hangs down in the channel or rattles loose, the internal rubber bumper or piston ring is failing.
Pass Sinks nails flush and the blade snaps all the way back every shot.

On a stick framing gun, pull the follower spring all the way back and let it slide forward under your thumb: dented aluminum rails pinch the nail strip and cause dry-fires. On a coil roofing nailer, open the canister door and check the hinge pin and feed pawls for tar buildup or bent teeth.
Pass Follower glides smoothly; coil door latches tight and feeds straight.

4 Cordless nailers: flywheel spin-up or gas chamber Clavadoras inalámbricas: motor o cámara de aire
Cordless framing nailers use either a spinning flywheel or a sealed nitrogen air spring. Press the nose against scrap wood: a flywheel gun should spin up smoothly without squealing bearings, and a sealed air-spring gun should drive a 3-1/4 inch nail flush in one stroke without leaving the head proud.
Pass Drives full-length nails flush without error lights or stalls.

5 Compressor pump-up time and regulator cut-out Tiempo de llenado y paro automático del compresor
When testing a pancake or twin-stack compressor, start with the tank empty and time how long it takes to reach cut-out pressure. Watch both gauges: the pressure switch should click off crisply at the rated PSI, and the check valve should hold pressure without leaking back through the pump head.
Pass Builds pressure briskly, shuts off at rated PSI, and holds pressure.

6 Crack the tank drain valve at the bottom Abre la purga de abajo del tanque
With a little air in the tank, reach under the bottom and crack the drain petcock for two seconds. Clear condensation is normal; thick orange rust sludge or a drain valve rusted solid means the tank sat full of water and may be pitted thin from the inside.
Pass Drain valve turns by hand and blows clear air, not heavy rust mud.
Know a stand with an air line? ¿Conoces un puesto con manguera de aire?
Stands that keep a compressor pressurized and scrap 2x4s under the table make it easy to test a framing or roofing gun on the spot.
