Spotting counterfeit batteries, clones, and ground-off serials Cómo detectar baterías clonadas, imitaciones y números de serie borrados

Most roadside stands sell pallet returns, pawn closeouts, and used trade-ins. Every so often, though, a table has knockoff battery packs in look-alike shells, generic impact wrenches with counterfeit stickers, or tools with the serial plate scraped off. Here is how to spot them in thirty seconds.

Six checks before you buy Seis señales para revisar

You do not need to open a tool housing to spot a clone or a bad serial tag. Check the weight, the screws, the molded lettering, and the serial plate right at the table.

  1. 1 Walk away from ground-off or melted serial plates No compres si el número de serie está borrado

Look at the rating plate first. A genuine pallet return or trade-in still has its factory model and serial number intact. If the serial window has been ground with a flap disc, melted with a soldering iron, or gouged out with a knife, leave it on the table. A defaced serial kills any manufacturer service and is a common sign of a stolen tool.

Pass Factory model and serial plate intact and legible.

Counterfeit batteries often printimpossible or odd numbers on the side sticker, such as "9.0Ah" or "12.0Ah" on a thin ten-cell housing that only holds 4.0Ah or 5.0Ah cells, and they feel noticeably light in your hand. Compare the pack's height and weight against a genuine pack from your truck.

Pass Weight and case size match a factory pack for that amp-hour rating.

Major cordless makers assemble battery packs with security Torx screws (with a center pin) and thick nickel-plated terminal contacts. Cheap knockoff packs almost always use plain silver Phillips screws, thin tin blades that bend easily, and blurry printing on the bottom warning label.

Pass Factory security Torx fasteners, thick terminal blades, sharp label print.

On most pro drills, impacts, and saws, the brand name on the side of the clamshell housing is injection-molded plastic or an inlaid rubber overmold. Knockoff clones use a generic unbranded shell and stick a flat vinyl or paper decal into the recess. Run your thumbnail across the edge of the logo.

Pass Molded or inlaid factory badge, not a peeling sticker.

Shine your phone flashlight through the rear motor vents. A tool advertised as brushless should show a stationary wound stator and no carbon brush holders sparking at the commutator. If you see heavy arc flashes and smell ozone on a tool sold as brushless, the housing or label does not match the motor inside.

Pass Motor construction inside the vents matches the model number on the plate.

  6. 6 Check for fresh spray paint over heavy wear Cuidado con pintura fresca sobre golpes viejos

On air nailers, generators, and rotary hammers, look closely at the magnesium nose casting and handle seams. Honest jobsite wear shows scuffed factory powder coat. If the rubber grip, warning decals, and air fittings have overspray on them, someone rattled-canned a beat-up unit to make it look newer from ten feet away.

Pass Honest factory finish with no rattle-can overspray on grips or fittings.
