Flip the pack over and read the stamped date code on the bottom or by the rails. Packs older than four or five years of jobsite heat hold less run time even when the LED gauge lights all four bars. Press the fuel-gauge button: if one bar blinks or the lights stay dark on a pack the seller says is charged, pass on the battery.

A battery that lights up in your hand can still throw a fault code on the charger if an internal cell group is out of balance. Ask the seller to slide the pack onto a plugged-in charger for ten seconds. You want the normal charging light, not an alternating red-green fault flash.

On a two-speed or three-speed drill, slide the top gear selector all the way into Speed 1 and then Speed 2 while driving a screw. Worn shift forks pop out of gear halfway through a heavy drive and chatter loudly without turning the chuck.

Push a 1/4-inch hex bit into the impact driver collet and tug on it with the battery removed. The ball bearing should lock the bit so it cannot pull out until you lift the collar. Next, sink a long lag screw: the hammer mechanism should strike evenly without skipping or locking the trigger.

Squeeze the trigger slowly from a crawl to full speed. A brushless tool with a failing controller board will stutter, jump straight to full RPM, or cut out mid-pull. Let go of the trigger at full speed: the electric brake should stop the chuck almost right away instead of coasting.
Pass Smooth speed ramp from low to high and crisp electric brake stop.
